Subject: Brushford and Eggesford, Devon
Hi everybody.
I'll start this message by discussing a new result from the Family Tree
DNA lab, for Richard (kit 182020), whose Pike ancestry hails from the
villages of Eggesford and Brushford in Devon.
We had anticipated that Richard might turn out to be a close genetic match
with Robert (kit N43252) whose ancestors once lived in the village of Zeal
Monachorum, just three miles away from Brushford. But when we got the DNA
results, it was clear that they are not a genetic match: Robert is in
haplogroup I, whereas Richard is in haplogroup G.
Our project has only one other participant in haplogroup G, namely Graham
(kit 130628) whose Pike ancestors lived in the Devon village of Salcombe
Regis. Graham received his DNA results over a year ago, at which time he
had no matches in our project. But now comparing Graham's results with
Richard's, they are perfect matches at both the 12-marker and 25-marker
levels. They have both tested 67 markers, and so it's interesting to see
that they have five mis-matching markers among markers 26-67. Despite
these five differences, within the whole of the Family Tree DNA database,
Richard and Graham are each their only close matches at the 37-marker and
67-marker levels. So we have reason to believe that Richard and Graham
descend from a common Pike ancestor, but the presence of the five
differences in their results makes us think that this ancestor probably
lived 350 or more years ago (given what is already known about Richard's
and Graham's lineages, they definitely do not connect anytime in the past
250 years).
What we are now hoping for is for additional Pikes with Devon ancestry to
join our project, so that we might discover additional branches of this
family, which is now shown on our website as "Group 19".
On a slightly different note, through my membership in the Guild of
One-Name Studies I've been able to obtain a complimentary map from
www.rootsmap.com showing the distribution of the Pike surname in the
United Kingdom at the time of the 1881 census. You can obtain a
full-sized copy of this map by clicking on the small-sized version of it
on our project's FAQ page:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=faq.html
Something that is particularly interesting to observe is that in 1881, the
county with the most Pikes in it was Devon (which we have just been
discussing).
Finally, Family Tree DNA has just announced that they are having a sale in
which the cost of new kits ordered for 37-marker or 67-marker tests have
been reduced. The new Family Finder test is also included in this sale
(and for the Family Finder test the sale applies both to upgrades for
existing customers as well as for newly ordered kits for new customers).
The sale will last until the end of December.
Thanks,
- David.
