Subject: Matches for Groups 8 and 10

Hi everybody.

This message has news of two new results that have matched with members of
Groups 8 and 10, and then goes to on to mention a few additional items.

Regarding the two new results, it was the Group 10 match that came first.
Walter (kit 176927) traces his paternal ancestry back to Hugh McPIKE who
was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1761, as is shown in Walter's pedigree:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=Pedigrees/176927.html

Another descendant of Hugh, namely Jack (kit 120174), had already done a
DNA test and so we had anticipated that Walter's results would be similar
to Jack's and the other members of Group 10 to which Jack had already been
added. When Walter's results came back from the lab, they were a perfect
37-marker match with Jack's results, providing our project with its 9th
perfect 37-marker match.

The other new result to mention is for John (kit 176987) who had
previously traced his Pike ancestry back to a William S Pike who was born
in Georgia in 1832 and who died during the US Civil War, in 1863 at the
battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia.

William S was listed as being age 19 in the 1850 census, and was recorded
immediately after the family of a John W Pike (age 35). They were living
in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, but just what relationship there might be
between William S and John W was a bit of a mystery at the time that John
joined the DNA project. Incidentally, it was on 02 January 1851 that the
census taker recorded these details.

When we got John's results, we got our project's 10th perfect 37-marker
match, between John and three of the people in our Group 8 (namely Keith
80666, Sara/Marvin 61285, and an anonymous 160167) and so John has also
been added to this group. With some subsequent investigation, we've found
that John's ancestor William S was a son of Daniel Pike who was born in
Edgefield County, South Carolina about 1805. The mini family tree shown at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Group8
has now been updated to reflect John's place in the family tree. His full
pedigree can be seen at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=Pedigrees/176987.html

Moving on to some other items, I'll take a moment to mention that Stuart
and I continually work to try to bring new Pike lines into our project.
Lately I've been focussing on a few of the early and noteworthy Pike
families from England that are mentioned at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=early.html
When making contact with members of these families, it is helpful to be
able to offer some financial assistance regarding the cost of the initial
Y-DNA test. Our project's sponsorship fund is not currently depleted, but
this is as good a time as any to solicit a few donations. Contributions
can be made online by going here
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-general-fund-contribution.aspx
selecting "P" and then "Pike".

Another project that we've been working on separately from our project's
normal focus on Y-DNA testing, is to test the mtDNA of Zebulon Pike...
well, not Zebulon himself, but somebody who shares his mtDNA. We've
actually found such a person and have collected a DNA sample. To analyse
the mtDNA will cost $103, so donations are most welcome (so far we've
raised $20 towards this goal). For anybody who might not know who Zebulon
was, here's a link to his page at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebulon_Pike

In other news, you might be interested to know that I recently did an
interview about genealogical DNA testing with a local cable TV station
here in Newfoundland. A video clip of my interview can be seen here:

Lastly, Family Tree DNA has just announced another sale, this one for
upgrades to previous Y-DNA tests. Discounted prices to have additional
markers tested will be in effect until July 19th.
