Subject: [PIKE-DNA] Three new matches and Two new groups
Hi everybody.
In this update we have news of three new genetic matches, one within our
project's "Group 1" and two others that have given rise to two new groups
for our project.
I'll begin with Eugene (kit 120385) whose 12-marker results were our first
clue that he belongs to our project's "Group 1". When provided with some
details about Eugene's parents and grandparents, we were able to trace his
ancestors through several census records, ultimately finding his exact
connection with the family of John Pike who settled in Massachusetts in
1635. As now shown in the mini family tree at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Group1
Eugene's great great grandfather was a brother of Zebulon Montgomery Pike
(after whom Pikes Peak in Colorado is named).
Next up is a 37-marker result for an anonymous participant with kit number
133186. We've found a perfect 12-marker match with Rexford (60427) who
has been patiently waiting for a genetic match since his results came back
from the lab in July 2006. As yet we do not have any pedigree details
that we can share regarding participant 133186, but we can say that
Rexford has traced his Pike ancestry back to Leonard Pike who lived at
Truro, Massachusetts in the early 1700s. Twelve-marker matches can
sometimes be "false positives" (i.e., if there are unseen differences
among the remaining markers that have not yet been tested), but based on
this match we have tentatively placed Rexford and 133186 into a
newly-formed "Group 14" at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Group14
Last in today's email is Walter (kit 140027) who tested 37 markers and was
found to match with David (70319) on 24 of his 25 marker results. Their
genetic match has given rise to "Group 15" at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Group15
where we can also see that Walter and David are fifth cousins. Each has
traced his Pike ancestry back to the villages of Chart Sutton and Headcorn
in Kent, England. Specifically, both Walter and David trace back to
William Pike and Sarah Goodburne who married in Chart Sutton, in 1771.
Walter is a descendant of their second son George and David from their
third son Robert. Incidentally, David's DNA results were reported by the
lab back in October 2006, so he too had been waiting for a while for his
first Pike genetic match.
- David.
