Subject: [PIKE-DNA] An upgrade and a new Devonshire result
Hi everybody.
In this bulletin we have news regarding two recently-reported results:
one that is new and one that is an upgrade.
To begin with the upgrade, kit 59944, for Stacey's father Calvin, was
upgraded from its initial 12 markers to the full precision of 67 markers.
As reported in August, Calvin's first 12 markers suggested that he was
related to Keith (80666), Sara's brother Marvin (61285), and Joshua
(102342) in our project's "Group 8". The upgrade of Calvin's DNA from 12
to 67 markers has upheld this relationship. Indeed, Calvin is a
near-perfect 66 out of 67 marker match with both Keith and Marvin.
We have pedigree information available for Sara/Marvin as well as
Stacey/Calvin, whose Pike genealogies go back to Adair County, Kentucky and
Robertson County, Tennessee, respectively, so the next goal is to try to
find out just how it is that these two lines connect to each other.
The other result that I want to highlight in this message is for Graham
(kit 130628), who lives in Japan but has Pike roots from the village of
Salcombe Regis in Devon. Specifically, Graham's great great grandfather
John Pike was born at Salcombe Regis about 1801. A family tree once
prepared by Graham's father suggests that John's father and grandfather
were both named Henry Pike, but their place of origin is not certain. When
Graham's results came back from the lab, we discovered that he has no Pike
genetic matches. But more than that, Graham's haplogroup is one that we
hadn't encountered before. Whereas most of our project members are in the
"R1a", "R1b" or "I" haplogroups, Graham is in the "G" haplogroup, which is
reckoned to have its origins some 30 thousand or so years ago in the
vicinity of the Near East. The "G" haplogroup is today found at a
frequency of about 5% in Europe.
In terms of our project, Graham's DNA results now bring our tally of
unrelated (i.e. genetically distinct) Pike families up to 15 that we can
pinpoint within the British Isles, and to 38 globally. With respect to
Devon, we now have evidence of two unrelated Pike families there:
Graham's family from Salcombe Regis, and that of Robert (kit N43252) from
parish of Zeal Monachorum, both of which have their own pushpin in our
colour-coded map at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Map
(where each colour, or shade of colour, represents a genetically distinct
Pike family).
