Hi Charmaine.
I'm replying in public, as the answer your question may be of interest to
several of the other people on the mailing list who also received your
message.
The markers come from small portions of the Y-chromosome and collectively
form a sort of genetic signature that brands a person's direct paternal
line of ancestry [which typically corresponds to the same line that their
surname came down]. Only men have a Y-chromosome, which is why it is male
Pikes who we need to provide DNA samples for the Pike DNA Project.
As for how the DNA sample is collected, it is *not* through a blood test,
but rather from a painless cheek swab. We've been relying on the services
of a Houston-based company named FamilyTreeDNA to conduct the genetic
analysis for us.
Take care,
- David.
