Subject: [PIKE-DNA] New Results and New Matches

Hi everybody.

This email bulletin begins with the news of two more results that have
come back from the lab and that have resulted in two new genetic matches.

The first of these involves Ronald (kit 114040), for which 37 markers were
recently analysed and revealed that the haplogroup involved is J2 [which is
slightly rare within our project, now occuring only 5 times]. Of the
other four J2 Pikes, Ronald turned out to be a close match with Thomas
(kit 24941), who had already tested all 67 markers. Thomas and Ronald
match on 34 out of 37 markers, indicating that they share common paternal
ancestry. Their results are now shown as "Group 11" at:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Group11
As for this group's origins, the best that we can say so far is that
Thomas' ancestry goes back to a Thomas Pike who was born in Virginia,
and that Ronald's ancestry goes back to John Pike also from Virginia.
Incidentally, the match between Thomas and Ronald was one that took a
while to establish, in the sense that Thomas was the 3rd person to join
the Pike DNA Project and had been match-less since his results came back
from the lab in Dec 2004.

The other recent match involves Richard (kit 113760) and Linda (87726).
Linda had her father's DNA tested back in early 2007, while Richard's
results have just now come back from the lab. They match on 24 out of 25
markers, confirming earlier suspicions that their two families were
related. As for the origins of what is now shown as "Group 12" on our
project's website, Linda has traced her Pike lineage back to a Francis
Pike who was born in Germany in 1779 and later settled in Greencastle,
Pennsylvania, while Richard's line has been traced back to a Francis Pike
who was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania about 1804.

Meanwhile, Dale (30937) recently upgraded his results from 12 to 37
markers. As expected, he is a very close match (36 out of 37 markers) with
his father's first cousin Allen (33139). Their results are shown as part
of our "Group 1".

One last thing that I want to mention in this update is that in March, the
Berkshire Family History Society in the UK published in their newsletter a
short article that I had submitted to them. The article, which mentions
our DNA project, can be read in full at:
