Subject: [PIKE-DNA] Another new Pike lineage
Hi everybody.
For this email bulletin I have three short items to mention.
The first is that we now have test results available for
Rex Pike (kit 96341), who is one of our project participants
from New Zealand. At 37 markers, Rex's closest matches in our
project are with Marvin and Keith in our project's "Group 8".
However, Rex's DNA results have 12 differences when compared
to Marvin and Keith, and so there is little chance of a
relationship within the past few hundred years. Hence Rex
represents another new Pike lineage for our project. But
more than that, since Rex's Pike ancestors are known to have
come from Lilstock, Somerset, we also have a new Pike lineage
within the British Isles. A new pushpin has correspondingly
been added to our British Isles map at:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html#Map
The second item I want to mention is that FamilyTreeDNA has
given our project a few coupons that can be used in conjunction
with new kits (i.e., not upgrades) that are ordered by the end
of December. Stuart and I have mentioned these coupons to a
number of people individually, but we haven't yet been able to
give them all away. In particular, we still have two $30 coupons
for tests of 37 or more markers, and one $15 coupon for a 25-marker
test. We are making these available on a first-come first-served
basis, so anybody who wishes to claim one of these coupons should
contact us as soon as possible.
Thirdly, I want to let people know that a new book has recently
been published by the UK National Archives. Its title is
"Family History in the Genes: Trace your DNA and grow your
family tree". I'm told that it is 256 pages in length and
that it's available for £7.99 in the UK or $9.71 in the USA
from the following:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/bookshop/details.aspx?titleId=393
http://www.internationalpubmarket.com/Books/BookDetail.aspx?productID=164084
I have not yet seen or read the book myself, but I expect that
it will serve as a good introduction. The book's author,
Chris Pomery, previously wrote the book "DNA and Family History"
which is now out of print. He has a brief bio online at:
