Subject: [PIKE-DNA] August Bulletin #2
Hi again.
In this email message there are two results that will be discussed.
The first involves Dennis (kit 93863) whose results did not match anybody
else in our project, indicating that his Pike line is one that we had not
previously encountered. As it happens, Dennis' DNA puts him into the J2
haplogroup, making him only the 4th J2 Pike in our project. With Dennis'
DNA representing a new Pike line for us, that put our tally of different
lines up to 29 (although if you look at our project's website, it now says
31, thanks to some more recent results that will be mentioned in a later
email bulletin).
Another recent result is that of August (kit 94742) (and for clarification,
here "August" is a forename, not a month). As we had hoped, August's DNA
results were a close match with Brad (kit 85494), who is August's first
cousin twice removed. Because of the genetic match, Brad and August have
given rise to our project's newest group, "Group 9". Brad and August do
however, have a difference on marker #3 (technically known as DYS-394, or
sometimes DYS-19 depending on which nomenclature standard is used). All
that this really means though is that a mutation in one of the two lineages
has occurred. In the meantime, Brad and August can trace their ancestry
back to Wesley W. PIKE (born about 1812) and Aleivia/Olivia DRAKE (born
about 1814) who lived in Hamilton County, Ohio. However, Wesley's ancestry
remains unknown.
Stepping away from discussing new DNA results for a moment,
this is a good opportunity to point out that Megan Smolenyak
(co-author of the book "Trace Your Roots with DNA: Using Genetic Tests
to Explore Your Family Tree") did an interview with NPR not long ago
in which she gave a good introduction to genetic genealogy. You can
listen to it online by going to
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11279426
and then clicking on the "Listen" button.
I should also mention that we have been able to put some of our project's
sponsorship funds to good use lately (by assisting with the test costs
for some newcomers to our project). This leaves us with $29 available
right now. Anybody who might be considering making a contribution to
help with future sponsorships can find instructions on how to donate
at the bottom of our project's "How to Join" page at:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=join.html
And on a final note, while in England several weeks ago I managed to visit
a number of places where people in our project have Pike ancestry, such as:
- in Dorset: Pimperne, Poole, Shapwick
- in Wiltshire: Landford and Whiteparish
- in Hampshire: Whitchurch
I also went to some places in Dorset that are known to have been home to Pikes that we
don't yet have in our project: Church Knowle, Cranborne, Stour Provost, and Worth Matravers.
Despite the rain I took several photos, of churches, Pike gravestones, etc., most of
which are now online at:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/gallery.shtml
Most are available only as small-size "thumbnail" photos, but full-size versions
of all the gravestones are accessible by clicking on the thumbnail version.
