Subject: [PIKE-DNA] Recent Test Results (Msg 3 of 3)

This is the third email in the present trilogy of messages.
Unlike the previous two emails, which both had one case of
a matching DNA result, the test results described in this
message did not match with anybody else in our project.
But they're still interesting results.

One of these two tests is for the father of Linda Pike (kit
number 87726). The test showed that Linda's Pike line belongs
to the R1a haplogroup, which is the same haplogroup as our
project's large "Group 1" clan. However, the particular
genetic signatures involved (that is, the combination of
marker values) show that Linda's Pike line is distinct from
our "Group 1".

Linda's Pike family origins are particularly noteworthy, as
her Pike line hails from a Francis Pike who was born in 1779
in Wurrtemberg, Germany. So we now have our first DNA result
for a Pike line with known origins on the European mainland
(rather than the British Isles). Francis and his mother emigrated
to Pennsylvania, where Francis married Mary Schrader and had
nine children. There is a family tree with some more information
about Francis online at:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wboth1252&id=I00368

The other test result that this email is about is for Richard
(kit 88850). His haplogroup is J2, so we now have a total of three
J2 Pikes in our project. However, Richard's genetic signature doesn't
match either of the other two, so it is for yet another genetic
Pike clan. Our tally of distinct genetic clans is now up to
at least 27, although sometime I probably ought to closely
double-check and make sure that I haven't overlooked anybody.

One particularly interesting aspect about Richard's Pike ancestry
is that it hails from the parishes of Pimperne and Shapwick in
Dorset, England. So the number of distinct Pike clans in the
British Isles can now be increased, raising the number up to
at least 7. But even more noteworthy is that we now have evidence
of several genetically distinct (meaning unrelated) Pike clans in
close proximity to each other in southern England. Shapwick is
only about 7 miles away from Poole (where our project's "Group 2"
is supposed to have come from) and is also not far from where we
have seen several ancestors of members in our "Group 1". You can
see this for yourself by looking that British Isles map that has
now been updated on our project's "Results" page:
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html

That pretty much concludes this round of email bulletins.
I reckon that the next email update will happen about two
weeks from now.

Take care,

- David.
