Subject: [PIKE-DNA] Recent Test Results (Msg 1 of 3)
Hi everybody.
In the past few weeks we have had a half dozen results come back from
the lab (3 of them last Wednesday alone). I'm not going to describe
all six at once in this email, but will instead try to spread them
out over three emails.
So then, let me start with kit 80326, which involves Kevin Pike
and his sister Deb. Their Pike lineage has its origins in the parish
of Edington in Wiltshire, not far from several other parishes in
Wiltshire and Hampshire that members of our project's "Group 1" clan
have ties to. However, not only did Kevin's DNA come back showing
no connection with our "Group 1", it did not match with any of our
other project members either. So it seems that Deb & Kevin's Pike
lineage represents yet another distinct Pike clan.
As it happens, the Edington parish registers have baptisms for two
John Pikes, one in 1766 who is a son of Moses Pike, and another
John Pike baptised in 1780 as a base-born son of Sarah Pike (who
herself was a daughter of Moses Pike). This latter John had
previously been ruled out as a possible father for Deb & Kevin's
3xgreat grandfather William Pike, born in 1805, largely because a
transcript of the records had interpreted the year of baptism as
1788 rather than 1780. However, in light of a more recent
interpretation of the original records, saying 1780, coupled now
with DNA results that do not match that of other nearby Pike families,
Sarah's son John is now getting extra attention as a candidate for
being William's father.
It warrants mention here that although Deb & Kevin do not yet have
any Pike DNA matches, they also have no matches with non-Pikes.
Hopefully in time some matches, be it with other Pikes or with some
other surname, will come along to help shed more light on the
question of John's paternity.
Turning now to another recent test result, Kenneth (kit 87449) received
results that did match some other Pikes in our project, namely those
in "Group 5" who hail from St Mary's County in Maryland. This match
was largely anticipated, as Kenneth already had a genealogical paper-trail
showing that he is a decendant of William Pike & Susannah Mills
who were married in 1791. We now have a collection of three matching
DNA results for "Group 5", all for descendants of William & Susannah.
Incidentally, a Robert Pike arrived in St Mary's County in 1634 with
a group of Catholic colonists on board the vessels Ark and Dove,
possibly making him the first Pike to settle in what is now the USA.
However, one challenge with the St Mary's County Pikes is that historical
records to connect back to Robert don't seem to exist any more, and so
Kenneth and his cousins end up getting stuck genealogically with
Archibald Pike, born about 1685, and who is suspected to be either
a grandson or great grandson of Robert who arrived in 1634.
That's enough for this email. Expect two more emails in the next
day or so with details about some of the other recent results.
- David.
