Subject: [PIKE-DNA] 3 new results
Hi everybody.
We've had three new sets of results come out lately. These are now
shown on our "Results" page at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html
To say a few words about these new results, I'll start with those for
Gilbert (kit 48884). His 25 markers were a perfect match with me, and
differ by just 1 value when compared with Philip (27777). Like Philip
and I, Gilbert has Pike ancestry from Newfoundland.
Next is Jason (kit N23598) who joined our project after obtaining 12-marker
results from the Genographic Project. Jason's 12 markers put him at a
genetic distance of 3 from Roger (kit 33184), which is close enough to
suspect that there might be a relationship, but still distant enough to
raise doubt.
And tonight the 25-marker results for Jackie's father George (kit 52162)
came out. George and Jason above are both predicted to fit into
Haplogroup I, bringing to 4 the number of people we have in this
haplogroup. However, George's DNA is somewhat different from the
others... on 12 markers his closest match is at a genetic distance of 11
(with Roger (33184)) and at 25 markers the closest match is at a genetic
distance of 22 (again with Roger). So it is pretty clear that Jackie's
Pike line is a new one in our project, raising the number of genetically
distinct Pike families up to 13. Jackie's earliest known Pike ancestors
lived in Massachusetts, so we now also have evidence of a yet another
Pike family in Massachusetts (bring the tally up to 5).
While speaking of Massachusetts, those of us who get Boston's NBC station
WHDH (Channel 7) might want to take note: I caught a very brief preview
during a commercial tonight. If I saw what I think I saw, then as part
of the 11pm news tomorrow evening (Monday April 3rd), there will be an
interview with Spencer Wells, who is the lead scientist in the Genographic
Project. I've seen him give similar interviews elsewhere, usually after
the local news team had had their own DNA analysed. There may not be
much talk about the genealogical applications (since the Genographic
Project is really an anthropological study) but they are doing the same
12-marker Y-DNA tests that FamilyTreeDNA performs and it is possible
for Pikes who start their DNA testing with the Genographic Project to
subsequently transfer their results to FamilyTreeDNA and into the
Pike DNA Project. So feel free to pass this alert on to anybody who
you think might be interested.
There are two other short items I want to mention. One is that FamilyTreeDNA
has reversed their decision to phase out the 25-marker test, so folks can
now choose from 12, 25, 37, or 59 markers. The other item I want to mention
is that a few of our project participants have ordered refinements, to extend
their DNA results to the full 59 markers that are now available. So in the
coming weeks I'll be adjusting the tables on our "Results" webpage to prepare
for when these new marker values start to be released.
