Subject: [PIKE-DNA] A Perfect 25-Marker Match
Hi everybody.
A week ago something really exciting happened with our DNA project:
a set of results came out and were a *perfect* 25-marker match with
another project participant. This has happened before, but last week
was the first time that it happened between two Pike's that had no
reason beforehand to suspect that they might be related. So we've
now got a "Group 4" on the "Results" page at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html
To say a few more words about these two matching results, one is for
Stuart Pike (kit 48191), who has been able to trace his Pike ancestry back
to a William H Pike who resided in Benton Harbor, Michigan, but who was born
somewhere in New York around 1835. The other result is for Ron Pike (34964),
whose ancestor Charles Pike was born in Ohio around 1828 but later resided
in Keokuk County, Iowa. The 1880 census states that Charles' father was
born in New York.
Stuart and Ron now have genetic evidence that they are related. The
challenge now is to find the historical records that tell them how.
Meanwhile, there were some other developments with our project.
For instance, two of the people listed in "Group 3" had upgraded their
12-marker results to 37 markers. Although their 12-marker results are
close matches to the very common 12-marker "Western/Atlantic Modal
Haplotype" (ie WAMH), the greater precision of 37 markers shows that
neither of them is closely related to anybody else currently in our
project.
There are still more results expected in the coming weeks (for at least
five more people), so hopefully there will be more news soon.
- David.
