Textbook: J. Stewart/D. Clegg/S. Watson: Calculus: Early transcendentals, 9th ed., Cengage, Boston, 2016 (required resource)
Outline: The course covers most parts of Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 in the textbook.
Examinations: There will be two midterm examinations and a comprehensive final examination. The midterm examinations take place on Tuesday, October 20 and Tuesday, November 17 during the tutorial. The final examination takes place during the examination period from December 10 to December 18 at a time and in a room determined by the registrar's office.
Quizzes: There will be weekly quizzes during the tutorials. The quiz with the lowest grade will be dropped from the computation of the final mark.
Homework: Beginning Tuesday of the second week, a weekly exercise sheet will be posted in the Brightspace shell of the course. This sheet will have blank space to fill in. The homework consists in filling in these blanks and to reupload the completed sheet into the Brightspace shell, using the Gradescope module of the shell. The completed sheet has to be uploaded by the following Tuesday. In addition, a reading assignment from the textbook will be given in every lecture.
Online homework: There will be online homework via the WeBWorK online homework system. There will be one or two assignments per week.
Help: Additional help is available via the Mathematics Help Centre and via Peer Assisted Learning.
Prerequisite: MATH 1090 or 109B, alternatively a combination of the mathematics placement test and high school mathematics scores acceptable to the department
Examination criteria: The final mark will be computed using the following weights.
- Homework: 7 percent
- Online homework: 7 percent
- Quizzes: 6 percent
- Midterm examinations: 15 percent each
- Final examination: 50 percent
Policies: Eating, drinking, and smoking is not permitted in the classroom. While attendance is not required, it will be recorded. The use of electronic devices, especially cellphones, calculators, and laptop computers, is not permitted without explicit permission of the instructor. Electronic devices have to be turned off completely. While the use of artificial intelligence is permitted, it is not allowed to copy its answers verbatim.
