23 April 1800 Will of Nathaniel Pike of Chatham, Kent, labourer (proved 10 September 1800)

This is the last Will
and Testament of me Nathaniel Pike of Chatham
in the County of Kent Labourer made Published
and declared this twenty third day of April in 
the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred 
in manner and form following (that is to say) I
give and bequeath unto each of my three Nieces
Jane Orchard Sarah Pike and Bridgett Fleming
Children of my late Brother John Pike deceased
the sum of Five pounds also I give and bequeath 
unto John Whiffen of Chatham aforesaid Parish
Clerk and John Leith of the Parish of Saint 
Margaret next the City of Rochester in the said
County of Kent Broker my Executors hereinafter 
named the sum of two pounds apiece all and
every my Leasehold Estates ready Money and Securities
for Money Money in the Publick Funds Specialties
Bonds Bills Notes Debts Household Goods and
Furniture and Implements of Household Plate


Linen China and Glass and all and every the
Rest Residue and Remainder of my Estate and
Effects whatsoever and wheresoever and of what 
nature or kind soever which I shall be possessed of
or entitled unto at the time of my decease I give
and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto
the said John Whiffin and John Leith their Exors
and Administrators upon Trust that they my
said Trustees and the survivor of them and the
Executors or Administrators of such Survivor do
and shall so soon as conveniently may be after my
decease collect get in and receive the same converting
such parts thereof into Money as shall not consist 
of Money and from and after first paying and
discharging thereout all my Just Debts Funeral
Expences and the Charges and Expences incident to
and attending the proving and Execution of this
my will pay apply and dispose of the Monies
arising and accruing therefrom and every part
thereof unto and amongst my Grand Children
Elizabeth Pike Robert Pike Susanna Pike Sarah
Pike Thomas Pike and Mary Ann Pike Children
of my late son Nathaniel Pike and Elizabeth
his wife in equal parts shares and proportions
when and so soon as they shall severally attain
their respective ages of twenty one years or to be
sooner applied to and for their use and benefit 
Education and advancement in the World as they
my said Trustees or the Survivor of them his Executors
or Administrators shall seem it expedient and 
necessary and most for the benefit and advantage 
of my said Grand Children respectively and in Case
of the decease of either or any of my said Grand
Children before he she or they shall have attained 
his her or their respective age or ages of twenty 
one years as aforesaid or before the whole of his
her or their part or share parts or shares of and
in the Monies to arise from the Residue of my 
Estate and Effects shall have been paid or applied
to and for his her or their use and benefit as aforesd
upon further Trust that they my said Trustees 
and the Survivor of them and the Executors or
Administrators of such Survivor do and shall pay 
apply and dispose of the part and share parts 
and shares of him her or them so dying as aforesd
or so much and such part thereof as shall or may
be remaining in their or his hands undisposed of
for the purposes aforesaid and every part thereof 
unto and amongst & for the use and benefit 
Education and advancement in the world of the
Survivors of them my said Grand Children in
equal parts shares and proportions when and at 
such time and times and in such 
  manner and form as their original
parts


shares and proportions thereof is hereinbefore directed 
to be paid and to and for no other      Trust 
intent or purpose whatsoever Provided always and it
is my will and meaning that the said John Whiffen
and John Leith their Executors Administrators and
Assigns shall be Charged and Chargeable only for
such Monies as they shall respectively actually receive 
by virtue of the Trusts hereby in them reposed nor
shall they or either or any of them be answerable 
or accountable for   any Banker Broker or
other person with whom or in whose hands and 
part of the said Trust Monies shall or may be 
deposited or Lodged for safe Custody or otherwise in the
Execution of any of the Trusts hereinbefore mentioned
nor shall they or either or any of them be at any 
time answerable or accountable for the insufficiency 
or Deficiency of any Security or Securities Stocks or 
Funds in or upon which the said Trust Monies or 
any part thereof shall be Placed out or invested 
nor for any other loss which may happen to the
said Trust Monies except the same shall happen
by or through his or their own wilful defaults 
respectively and that one of them shall not be 
answerable or accountable for the other of them or
for the Acts Deeds Defaults Receipts or Disbursements 
of the other of them notwithstanding either of 
them shall Join in any receipt for Conformity but
each of them for the Acts Deeds Defaults and ???
Disbursements of himself only And also that they the
said John Whiffen and John Leith their Executors 
Administrators and Assigns shall and may by
and out of the Monies which shall or may come to
their or his hands by virtue of the Trusts aforesaid 
detain to and reimburse themselves and himwelf all
Costs Charges Damages and Expences which they
or either of them shall or may sustain expend disburse 
or be put unto in or about the Execution of the
Trusts hereby in them reposed or in relation thereunto
And Lastly I do hereby make ordain nominate 
constitute and appoint the said John Whiffin and John
Leith Joint Executors of this my will and hereby 
revoking and making void all former and other will
and wills by me at any time heretofore made 
I declare this only to be my last will and 
Testament In witness whereof I the said Nathaniel 
Pike the Testator have to this my will contained
in two sheets of paper set my hand and seal in 
manner following (that is to say) to the bottom of 
the first sheet thereof I have set my hand and to 
this second and last sheet thereof my hand and 
seal the day and year first above written Nath Pike LS

This will was proved at London with a Codicil the tenth
day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand 
eight hundred before the Right Honourable Sir
William Wynne Knight also Doctor of Laws Master
Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court
of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of 
John Whiffin and John Leith the Executors named
in the said will to whom Administration of all and
singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the deceased
was granted having been first sworn by Commission
duly to Administer


This is a Codicil to be added to the last
will and Testament of me Nathaniel Pike of 
Chatham in the County of Kent Labourer which 
will bears date on or about the twenty third day of 
April now last past First I do hereby ratify and
Confirm my said will in all respects are so far as
any part thereof shall be revoked or altered by
this present Codicil and whereas the sum of 
eighteen pounds four shillings and six pence is
now due and owing to me by and from Benjamin
Evans of the Parish of Gillingham in the said County
of Kent Sawyer for Money lent and advanced by
me the said Nathaniel Pike to the said Benjamin
Evans Now I do hereby give and forgive the same
unto him the said Benjamin Evans and I do hereby
release and discharge the said Benjamin Evans 
his Heirs Executors and Administrators and every of 
them of and from the payment of the said Sum of
Eighteen pounds Four   shillings and six pence and
all and every Debt and Debts Sum and Sums of
Money due and owing to me or my Estate upon
any Account whatsoever at the time of my 
decease And it is my will and meaning and I do
hereby direct that he and they shall not be
answerable or accountable to my Executors for the same Also I
give and bequeath unto my Grandson Robert
Pike son of my late Son Nathaniel Pike deceased
my best watch with the Chain Seal and ????
Appurtenances thereunto belonging Also I give 
and bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Pike
Brother to the said Robert Pike my other watch
with the Chain Seal and Appurtenances thereunto
belonging Also I give and bequeath unto my said 


two Grandsons Robert Pike and Thomas Pike my wearing
Apparel of all sorts equally to be divided between them
share and share alike Also I give and bequeath unto
my Grand Daughters Elizabeth Pike Susannah Pike
and Mary Ann Pike (the Daughters of my said late
Son Nathaniel Pike deceased) all and every my sheets and
the wearing Apparel of my late dear Wife deceased
equally to be divided between and amongst them share
and share alike And I do hereby revoke and make
void all former and other Codicils by me at any time 
heretofore made In witness whereof I the said 
Nathaniel Pike have to this present writing which
I hereby declare to be a Codicil to my last will and
Testament and which I direct to be added thereto and
to be taken as part thereof set my hand and Seal
the twentieth day of May in the Year of our Lord
