Early Ivamy Families of Trinity Bay, Newfoundland

With the information that follows, I am beginning to attempt to summarise and detail the early Ivamy families of Trinity Bay. Records generally begin around the 1750's, at which time there seem to already be 3 separate Ivamy families: Of these three patriarchs, James was likely the most senior, as he was buried in Feb 1766, while his daughter Sarah was married in June 1766. George and Margaret's first child James was baptised in Feb 1757, while John & Patience had children baptised up to 1771. Of these three matriarchs, Margaret lived to the age of 95. She died on 12 Jan 1829 and is buried in English Harbour, where her headstone still stands. I don't know what became of Mary or Patience. I don't have maiden names for any of these women. Whether these three families were originally related in some way is unknown to me. James is reputed to have come from Ringwood, Hampshire, but I have not seen any evidence to this effect. Note also that there are additional very early Ivamy's, such as the following I suspect that Mary (wife of Francis Long) is a daughter of James & Mary Ivamy, but I know nothing of the origins of the other two Mary's. Likewise, I don't know who the parents of George and James were (although James & Mary Ivamy are a possibility).

Registers of St. Paul's Anglican Church (Trinity)

Below are transcripts of events recorded in the register for the Anglican Parish of St. Paul, in Trinity. A microfilm copy of the parish register can be viewed at the National Archives (it is microfilm number M-1947). Be aware that I may have introduced some errors in transcription... if you spot errors/omissions, let me know. Also note that some records (especially the early ones) sometimes appear multiple times in the register. It also seems to have been common practice to baptise children more than once (the first baptism likely being done privately in the home, with the second being a public event).

Methodist Records from Trinity

Methodist Missionaries arrived in/near Trinity in the early 1800's and soon established a following in English Harbour. Among those who converted were many members of the Ivamy family. I have not found any registers of baptisms, marriages, etc, for Trinity or English Harbour but several of the missionaries kept journals and regularly sent extracts to their superiors in England. I have transcribed a number of these letters to England, which you can view here. Notably among these letters are: Items published in the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine also offer some information:

Court Records

In August 1993, Cec Vivian sent me a copy of a transcript of the trial of John Quinlan, who stood accused of the murder of John Bugden. A guilty verdict and death penalty were announced on 3 Oct 1771. Central to the trial was the testimony of William Ivamey, who is recorded as being between 16 and 17 years of age. Apparently John Quinlan resided at English Harbour, and from the testimony, it appears that William Ivamey resided there too. It further sounds like Quinlan was living in the house of Mrs. Sweet.

The source of this record is CO 194 - Vol.30 (1771) - Film B/675 at PANL, although A0059 (pages 2-6) is handwritten on the typed transcript that I was sent.
