Mathematics 2050: Linear Algebra I (Winter 2018)

In Math 2050, we begin by studying the vector. You may have already used vectors in a subject like physics, but vectors are actually a very important and generalisable mathematical concept. We'll introduce the basic properties of vectors as they relate to real numbers, paving the way for a more in-depth understanding of vectors as an abstract concept in Math 2051. Using vectors as a springboard, we'll also develop the notion of the matrix, and understand how matrices can be used for important tasks such as the solution of systems of equations. Finally, we'll study fundamental ideas related to matrices, including inverses, determinants and eigenvalues, which have innumerable applications throughout the sciences and related fields. For the most part, we'll take a very computational and algorithmic approach to Math 2050... but there is some vital theory to be mastered, too!

On this page, you'll be able to download course handouts (including assignments, tests and solutions). If there is a disruption to the class schedule -- because of weather, for instance -- you should check this page for news relating to modified due dates and the like. Corrections to any errors on assignments or worksheets will also be posted here... although I'll try my best not to make any!
