28 January 1822 Will of Catherine Way of Trinity, Newfoundland (proved 25 June 1823)

I Catharine Way of Trinity in
the Island of Newfoundland being of sound mind and memory do make and 
ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say)
I desire to be just decently interred with as little expence as possible and without pomp 
or show and I desire that no mournings scarfs or hatbands be furnished that four 
men bearers carry me to my grave and the sum of half a guinea be paid to each 
of them (any men may act as bearers) And Whereas I am possessed of certain monies now 
in the hands of Mr William B Best of Poole I do hereby dispose of the same in the 
following manner (that is to say) First I desire that all my just debts and funeral 
expences be fully paid and satisfied Secondly I give and bequeath unto my God
Daughter Sarah Way Lander of Poole the sum of one hundre pounds Sterling 
Thirdly I give and bequeath unto Susanna Lander Wife of John Lander of Poole 
the sum of forty pounds sterling Fourthly I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Mary
Ash Daughter of Mr Richard Ash of Trinity the sum of thirty pounds sterling Fifthly
I give and bequeath unto Susanna Lander (the second) Daughter of the aforesaid 
Sarah Way Lander of Poole the sum of thirty Pounds sterling Sixthly I give and 
bequeath unto Louisa Lander Daughter of the aforesaid John and Susanna Lander 


the sum of nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings Seventhly I give and bequeath
unto my Sister Ann Penny Wife of William Penny Senior of English Harbor the sum
of twenty Pounds sterling & eighthly I give and bequeath unto my Sister Jane May the
sum of twenty pounds sterling I also give and bequeath of the remainder of my property 
in manner following (that is to say) To my good Friend Catharine Ash Wife of Mr Richard 
Ash aforesaid a black gown in remembrance of me To Louisa Lander aforesaid my
bed bedstead bedding and furniture To Susanna Lander Wife of John Lander 
aforesaid a muffatippet and a mourning ring And to my Sister Ann Penny
aforesaid all my wearing apparel And as to all the residue or remainder of my
property of what kind and nature soever and wheresoever the same may be found
on my decease after the expences of proving my Will has been paid is to be equally 
divided between the aforesaid Susanna Lander (the second) and the aforesaid Louisa 
Lander And I do hereby revoke all former Will or Wills by me made And Lastly I do 
hereby constitute and appoint my mutual Friends Richard Ash Senior and William
Kelson both of Trinity Executors of this my last Will and Testament In Witness 
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty eighth day 
of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two 
Catharine Way her mark  LS  Signed sealed published and declared by the said 
Catharine Way as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have
hereunto set our names as Witnesses thereto the alterations of the names of Maria 
into Mary in line the eleventh and of Susanna into Louisa in line the twentieth
and the words "the second" erased being first made  Thomas Powell  Joseph
Taverner  Geo Skelton

Proved at London 25th June 1823 before the Judge by the oaths of Richard
Ash the elder and William Kelson the Executors to whom Admon was granted 
being first sworn duly to administer
