This is the last Will and Testament of me
John Gosse formerly of Ringwood in the County of Southampton in the Kingdom
of Great Britain but now of Carboniar in the Island of Newfoundland In
the first place I request that my worthy Friends Mr Oliver Saint John Mr James
Cowan both of Harbor Grace Mr Francis Pike Junior of Carboniar and Mr
Thomas Crew of the Town and County of Poole in the Kingdom of Great
Britain will act as my Executors and I do hereby appoint them the said
Oliver Saint John James Cowan Francis Pike Junior and Thomas Crew
to be Executors to this my last Will and Testament directing them in the first
place discharge out of my property all just debts that I may owe at the time
of my decease and the Remainder of my proprty I dispose of in
manner following I give and bequeath to my Sister Ann Lyne Watts formerly
of Ringwood but at present residing in Carboniar the sum of Fifty pounds
sterling I give and bequeath to my niece Mary Ann Watts daughter of my
Sister Ann Lyne Watts aforesaid the sum of Fifty pounds sterling I give and
bequath to each of my Executors one suit of mourning of the value of twelve
pounds Sterling I give and bequeath to my Wife Mary Gosse all my books
papers wearing apparel and household furniture to have and to hold the
same for her own use and benefit I do further give and bequeath to my Wife
Mary Gosse all my interest in and title to the plantation on which we now
resides situated in Carbonear together with my interest in the dwelling house
stores shops stages Flakes cook room Cow house accompting house and every
other building thereon & every thing appertaining thereunto (being one half of
the same to have and to hold the same In trust for my sons John Gosse
and William Gosse until my son William aforesaid shall have attained
the age of twenty one years or to the survivor of them if she shall so long
live but in case of her decease before that time I will and direct that my Exors
do let the same from year to year or on lease until my son William shall
have attained the age of twenty one years when the same shall be delivered
up to them the said John Gosse and William Gosse or to the survivor of them
by my Wife Mary Gosse unincumbered and it is my Will and I do hereby
direct that the rent of the siad Premises be appropriated towards the maintenance
of all my children by my present Wife Mary Gosse until my said son William
is of age at which time it is to be the property of my sons John and William
aforesaid or the survivor of them and his or their heirs for ever but upon this
express condition that they do pay to their Mother Mary Gosse annually the
sum of Forty pounds sterling so long as she shall live to be paid on the
first day of November in each year and for which payments the said
Plantation and premises shall be her security And whereas the remainder of
my property is employed in trade and Merchandize excepting my share of out
standing debts jointly and in copartnership in the Mr George Welch Ledgard of
Poole I will and direct that the said Copartnership concern be settled by my
Executors agreable to the articles of Copartnership existing between me and
the said George Welsh Ledgard and that as soon as the same is adjusted
I will and direct that my Executors do receive of Mr George Welch Ledgard
the money that shall appear due to me and therewith after the aforesaid
legacies have been paid immediately purchase government security in
the three per cent consols in trust for my Wife Mary Gosse my two daughters

by my former Wife viz Sarah Gosse and Jane Elisabeth Gosse as also my children
by my present Wife viz Mary Gosse John Gosse Ann Gosse William Gosse and
Susan Gosse the same to be divided between my said Wife and children equally
my Wife to be paid her part whenever she shall demand it and each of my
children to receive their parts when he or she shall have attained the age
of twenty one yrears previous to which the interest of the money aforesaid shall
be paid to my Wife Mary Gosse expressly for the purpose of maintaining and
supporting herself & her children until they become of age and if in case one or
more of my children should die before that time then my Will is that my Wife
and surviving children shall divide the money between themselves in equal
parts And whereas one half of the outstanding debts due to the late Firm of & Gosse        ^ Gosse & Chancey one third of
Chancey and Ledgard and one half the outstanding debts due to the present    		     the debts due to the late Firm of
firm of Gosse & Ledgard ?o my right and property I do hereby earnestly request
of my Executors resident in Newfoundland to endeavour to collect annually as
much as possible of said debts and to appropriate the same towards the support
and maintenance of my Wife and children And it is my Wish provided it
shoudl be agreeable to my Wife that she and the children should reside in
Poole but this I leave to her discretion to do as she thinks best And I do hereby
revoke all former Wills and Testaments whatsoever In Witness whereof I
hereunto subscribe my name and affix my seal this twenty third day of
January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen

Codicil to my last Will and Testament Whereas I am now about to
embark with my Wife and family for England I do hereby confirm my said last
Will and Testament bearing date the 23rd day of January on thousand eight 
hundred & fifteen provided we all or any part of us should arrive safe but if it
should please the Great Disposer of all events to appoint otherwise it is my
desire to be resigned to his Will and in that case I do hereby give and bequeath
to my Father in law Fr Francis Pike Sen or Carbonear all my right title
and Interest in and to the plantation and premises on which I now reside
with all buildings out houses and appurtenances thereunto belonging being
one moiety thereof as also my right title and interest to the longe store
(which belongs wholly to me) situated on said Plantation to have and to
hold the said plantation and premises with all the buildings and appurts
thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said Francis
Pike Senr and his heirs for ever nevertheless upon this express condition
that he the said Francis Pike Senr & his heirs do pay to my Sister Ann Lyne
Watts at present residing in Carbonear the sum of Fifty pounds sterling
annually during her natural life I give and bequeath the following legacies
to my nieces Mary Ann Watts and Eliza Salter one hundred pounds sterling
to each of them I give and bequeath to my newphews Henry Corbin Watts
of Carbonear Thomas Bell of Poole and John Wells of Poole the sum of one
hundred sterling to each of them to be paid to each of them by Executors 
and the Remainder of my property of whatever kind soever I do give
and bequeath to my brother Thomas Gosse formerly of Ringwood Hants but
at present of Poole And I do appoint the Executors named in my last Will and
Testament to be my Executors to this my Codicil In Witness whereof I do here-
unto subscribed my name and affix my seal this Fifth day of July in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixteen  Jno Gosse  LS

testament of the said testator at Carbonear Newfoundland where no stamps
are used and where there are no Attorneys at Law residing  Richd Linthorne

On the 12th January 1835 Admon (with the Will and Codicil annexed) of the
Goods Chattels & Credits of John Gosse formerly of Ringwood in the County of Southamp
ton afterwards of Carbonear in the Island of Newfoundland but late of the Town and
County of Poole Merchant decd was granted to John Gosse one of the natural and lawful
children of the said decd having been first sworn by Comon duly to administer Francis
Pike the younger and Thomas Crew the surviving Exors named in the said Will
having first renounced the probate and Exon thereof & also the aforesaid Codicil
There not being any Residuary legatee named in the said Will Mary Gosse Widow
the Relict having first renounced the Letters of Admon (with the said Will and
Codicil annexed) of the Goods of the said Deceased as by Act of Court appears
