ON the thirty first day of January 1877,
the Will of Julia Susanna Edwards
late of Number 1 Gloucester Terrace Southsea in
the parish of Portsea in the county of Southampton
Spinster
deceased, who died on the Nineteenth day of December 1876,
at No 1 Gloucester Terrace Southsea aforesaid
was proved in Her Majesty's High Court of Justice in the District Registry attached to
the Probate Division thereof at Winchester by the Oaths of
The Reverend Henry Hawkes of Saint Pauls Square
Southsea aforesaid clerk James Roberts on No 8 Thyra
Grove North Finchley in the County of Middlesex
Esquire and William Beresford Chambers Christy
of Marston Lodge Elm Grove Southsea aforesaid Esquire MD
a retired Surgeon from the Royal Navy the surviving
Executors therein named they having been first sworn duly to administer

This is the last Will and Testament of me
Julia Susanna Edwards of Number 1 Gloucester Place Southsea in the parish
of Portsea in the County of Southampton Spinster I appoint my Sister Dorothy
Gooch Widow and my friends The Reverend Henry Hawkes of Saint Paul's
Square Southsea aforesaid James Roberts of number 8 Tyra Terrace North
Finchley in the County of Middlesex Esquire and William Beresford Chambers
Christy Esquire Doctor of Medicine and a retired surgeon from the Royal Navy
Trustees and Executors of this my Will and I devise to them their heirs executors
and administrators all estates vested in me as a Trustee or Mortgagee subject to
the trusts and equities affecting the same respectively I Give and bequeath all
my jewels, trinkets, plate, linen, china, glass, books, pictures, furniture and other
household effects unto my said Sister Dorothy Gooch absolutely I direct my said
Trustees or the Trustees or Trustee for the time being to set apart out of the
income of the residue of my real and personal estate a sum sufficient to pay
an annuity of Ten pounds clear of all  legacy duty and other deductions
to Mrs Harriet Bishop of Christchurch in the County of Southampton
aforesaid Widow (who was the companion to my late friend Mrs John Spicer
deceased) for her separate and inalienable use by quarterly payments the first of
such payments to be made at the expiration of Three Calendar months from the
time of my decease I bequeath the following Legacies namely To Jane Christy
Kane the Wife of John Keymer Kane of the Ordnance Department at Dublin the
sum of Two thousand pounds for her sole and separate use To the said Henry
Hawkes the sum of Five hundred pounds to be paid to him within Three Calendar
months after my decease To the Minister for the time being of the High Street
Chapel in the Town of Portsmouth out of such part of my personal estate as the
law permits to be bequeathed for charitable purposes the sum of One hundred
pounds to be applied and disposed of by him in repairs or improvements in the
Schools or otherwise for the benefit of the Charitable Societies in connection with
the said Chapel as the said Minister may think proper and I direct that the receipt
alone of the said Minister for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to
my said Trustees and Executors for the said Legacy and that the two last mentioned
legacies shall be paid free from legacy duty and other deductions To Ann Hobbs
the late Mistress of the Lancasterian School of Portsea aforesaid the sum of Nineteen
pounds and nineteen shillings To Lucy Foord the present Mistress of the said School
the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings To my Servants Alexander Habens
Thomas Bond and Ann Marshall the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings



each To Charlotte Reid of Number 5 Southsea Terrace Southsea aforesaid
the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings To my Gardener John Evans
the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings I give devise and bequeath
all my share and interest of and in the freehold messuage and premises where
I and my said Sister now reside situate and being Number 1 Gloucester Place
Southsea aforesaid Also of and in the two pieces or parcels of land or garden
ground situate in or near Gloucester Place aforesaid Also of and in the two
freehold messuages land and premises situate in Oakley Place King's Road
Southsea aforesaid And also of and in my freehold messuage and premises
in Orange Street in the Town of Portsea And all other my real estate (if any)
whatsoever and wheresoever situate and being of or to which I may be
possessed or entitled at the time of my decease And also all my ready
money and securities for money, money at my Bankers and all the rest
and residue of my personal estate whatsoever unto the said Henry Hawkes
James Roberts and William Berisford Chambers Christy their heirs executors
administrators and assigns respectively Subject to the payment thereout of my
just debts and funeral and testamentary expences Upon Trust that the said
Henry Hawkes James Roberts and William Beresford Chambers Christy
or the survivors or survivor of them or the heirs executors or administrators of
such survivor or other Trustees or Trustee for the time being of this my
Will (hereinafter referred to as my sais Trustees or Trustee) shall stand
possessed thereof and of the stocks funds and securities in or upon which
my moneys or any part thereof may be invested Upon Trust to receive
the rents dividends and annual income thereof and pay the same unto or
permit my said Sister Dorothy Gooch to receive the same during her life and
from and after her decease Upon Trust to sell the said Messuages land
hereitaments and real estate either by public auction or private Contract with
power to make any special conditions or stipulations as to title or evidence of
title or otherwise and with power to buy in the said hereditaments and
permises or any part thereof at any attempted sale thereof by auction and to
rescind or vary either on terms or gratuitously and Contract for the sale thereof
and to resell the premises so bought in or the contract for sale whereof shall have
been so rescinded as aforesaid without being answerable for any loss occasioned
thereby and to execute assurances give effectual receipts for the purchase money
and do all such acts and things for comppleting any such sale or sales as they or he
may think fit And to sell call in and convert into money such parts of my



said personal estate as shall not consist of money and to stand possessed
of the money to be produced by such sale or sales calling in and conversion
Upon Trust after payment thereout of the expences of and attending such
sale or sales to set apart and invest a sufficient sum to produce by the
income therefrom the clear yearly sum of Forty pounds and to pay the same
quarterly to my faithful servant Mary Fletcher during her life the first
of such quarterly payments to be made within three Calendar months after
the death of my said Sister or of my death in case I shall survive her I bequeath
the following Legacies which I also direct to be paid within three calendar
months after the death of my said Sister or of my death in case I shall survive
her namely to Alicia Wright the daughter of the late Doctor Wright of
Haslar Hospital the sum of Five hundred pounds To Mary Wright Widow
of the late Lieutenant Colonel Wright of the Royal Marine Light Infantry
the sum of One thousand pounds To Wyvell James Christy of Southsea aforesaid
Architect and Surveyor and his Sister Benham Piers Christy the sum of One
thousand pounds to be equally divided between them and if either of them
shall die before the same shall become payable then I give the whole of the
said sum of One thousand pounds to the other of them To Susan Undy
and her Brother in law the said James Roberts the sum of One thousand pounds
to be equally divided between them and if either of them shall die before the
same shall become payable then I give the whole of the said sum of One
thousand pounds to the other of them To Emily Jane Payne the Widow of the
late James Edward Payne late of York Place City Road Solicitor deceased the sum
of Four hundred pounds To James Edward Undy Payne Emily Louisa Payne
and Margaretta Payne the children of the said James Edward Payne the sum of
Two hundred pounds each To Isabella Sadler the Widow of the late John Sadler
of the Portsmout Dockyard the sum of Four hundred pounds To Helen Ashton
the Wife of James Ashton and Isabella Sadler the daughters of the said John
Sadler the sum of Four hundred pounds to be equally divided between them
and if either of them shall die before the same shall become payable then I
give the whole of the said sum of Four hundred pounds to the other of them
To John Paul Sadler the Son of the said John Sadler the sum of Four hundred
pounds and if he shall die before the same shall become payable then i give the
same unto and equally between his Sisters the said Helen Ashton and Isabella
Sadler and if either of them shall die before the same shall become payable
then I give the whole of the said sum of Four hundred pounds to the other of



them To Mary Waller the Sister of the late Ann Pines the sum of
Two hundred pounds free from Legacy duty and other deductions To Maria
Pines the Niece of the said Mary Waller the sum of Five hundred pounds
To Susan Stone the Widow of the late Captain Stone the sum of Five hundred pounds
and if she shall die before the same shall become payable then I give the said
sum of five hundred pounds unto and equally between her two Sons William
Stone and Charles Henry Stone and in case of the death of either of them before
the same shall become payable then I give the whole of the said sum of Five
hundred pounds to the other of them To the said William Stone the sum of
Two hundred pounds To Frances Dowse the Sister of Captain Dowse of the Royal
Navy the sum of Five hundred pounds To Annie, Louisa and Sarah Foster
the daughters of the late Reverend Thomas Foster of Southsea aforesaid the sum
of Two hundred pounds to be equally divided between them and if either of
them shall die before the same shall become payable then I give the same
to the survivors or survivor of them for their respective sole and separate use
To Eliza Christy the Wife of the said William Beresford Chambers Christy the
sum of Three hundred pounds for her sole and separate use To the said John
Keymer Kane the sum of One hundred pounds To his Son Francis Inman Kane
the sum of One hundred pounds To Beresford Kane Barton Kane and Mary
Caroline Stevens Kane the sum of One hundred pounds each And as to all
the rest and residue of my said moneys securities and personal estate after
payment of the said Legacies and providing for the aforesaid Annuity and
from and after the decease of my said Sister I give and bequeath the same unto
the said Henry Hawkes James Roberts and William Beresford Chambers Christy
in equal shares if more than one and if there shall be only one of them then
living then I give and bequeath the whole thereof to that one I declare that
any money which under this my Will may become payable to a female
shall be for her own sole and separate use free from the debts control and
engagements of any husband to whom she may be married at the time when
the same shall be paid and that her receipts along notwithstanding her coverture
shall be sufficient discharges for the money in such receipt or receipts expressed
to be received And I declare that if either of the Trustees herein named shall
die in my lifetime or shall desire to retire from or refuse or become incapable
to act in the trusts of this my Will before the same shall be fully performed
then and in every such case it shall be lawful for my said Sister during her life
and after her decease for the continuing Trustees or Trustee for the time being



of this my Will and if there shall be no continuing Trustee then for the
retiring or refusing Trustees or Trustee or the executors or executor administrators
or administrator of the last acting Trustee to appoint any other person or persons
to be a Trustee or Trustees in the place of the Trustee or Trustees so dying or
desiring to retire or refusing or becoming incapable to act as aforesaid and upon
every such appointment the trust premises shall be transferred as to become
vested in the new Trustee or Trustees either jointly with the continuting Trustee
or Trustees or solely as the case may require And every such new Trustee
(as well before as after the said trust premises shall have become vested in him)
shall have all the powers and authorities of the Trustee for whom he shall
be substituted In Witness whereof I have to this my Will contained in this
and the four preceding sheets of paper set my hand to each of the said Sheets
this fifth day of August One thousand eight hundred and seventy six

Reverend Henry Hawkes Clerk James Roberts Esquire and William Beresford
Chambers Christy Esqr Doctor of Medicine the surviving Executors to whom administration
was granted
The Testatrix Julia Susanna Edwards was late of No 8 Gloucester Terrace Southsea
in the parish of Portsea in the County of Southampton Spinster and died on the
nineteenth day of December 1876 at No 1 Gloucester Terrace Southsea aforesaid
