31 October 1831 Will of Sarah Carter of Ryde, Isle of Wight, widow (proved 13 May 1848)

As my proper Will made by Mr Shugar has been
long void from the house at Titchfield being sold The money vested in
Nephew Harper's hands (from Broker Joseph Jellico's and my annuity 
legacies &c will be equally divided between all my dear Children I have
only to bequeath L1500 from the house at Titchfield which I wish to remain
as far as it can by former Will to my dear daughters Sarah Bussell L500
to my dear daughter Elizabeth Carter L500 to my dear daughter Susanna
L100 to my dear son Thomas Wren (now my only Son) L200 to my dear 
Son in law John Garrett Bussell L100 the other L100 to remain for
funeral expenses and Servants L5 each.  The furniture &c between all


my dear Daughters who live together except those pieces of furniture and
china my Daughters Elizabeth and Susanna generously purchased to be
exclusively their own and to be taken wherever they may chuse my daughter
Sarah Bussell to take any piece or pieces of Plate she likes and also my
Son, I bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth my watch and gold chain
pearls also gold chain and glass to Susanna the other Chain to Anna
Diamond ring with my beloved granddaughters E C Bussells hair to my
Daughter Sarah Bussell also the late Mrs Jellicoe's the diamond ring
with Lady Carter's hair to Susanna and the Pearl ring Mrs Chitty's lega-
cy also to Susanna Mrs Pare's to Elizabeth Mrs Shephards ring to
Anna the Garnett to poor S not willing to leave my afflicted daughter
without a trifling remembrance my dear husbands ring to whoever 
wishes to take it Books to be divided between all except dear Dames Dic
tionary to Susanna  the three volumes of Mant's Bible given me in re-
membrance of my amiable and beloved grandson William Bussell to be re-
turn'd to Mr T C Bussell his Father with thanks My small nest of 
drawers which was my mother's I leave to my daughter Susanna Car-
ter and           ????? one hundred pounds to my daughter  L100 Susanna wish I 
could leave more to every one Diamond Brooch to my dear Sister ????
more who gave it to me being my beloved Mothers the small mini????es
of my dear Father and Mother to my Sister Harriet tho' not a pleasing like-
ness of them taken only from Mr Cuthberts recolection wishing all
my dear Grand children to have a trifling remembrance which is all I can
give I request that every one may have a piece of money to dear Louisa
Bussell a five guinea piece to dear Mary Mrs James Henry Brooke a
give guinea piece to Elizabeth Capel Carter a two guinea piece to dear 
Agnes Mrs Nind a five guinea piece and a small piece to dear
Ellen a two guinea piece and a small piece the ????? dear Grandchild
a dollar each two gold medals and ???? Wren's miniature wherever ????
???? I do not think it necessary to contine the five guineas a year 
to the Revd Russell Scott after my demise I am indebted to the family
the sum I do not know that must be defrayed from my daughter's 
Sarah and Elizabeth's L500 It is my particular request to remain
undisturbed for some days after my decease and not to be committed to
the earth untill certain signs of my desciation shall have taken place
My Son in law John Garrett Bussell and my Son Thomas Wren to 
be my Executors if the latter is in England he will take the active part
and I repeat allow no one to hasten my interment The two gold
medals if not vained by a relative nearer than my Nephew George 
Atherley to be given to him who does collect & value them. The little
fillagre care for Almanack to my God daughter Emma Carter Jellicoe
and a small china box marked S T This is my last Will and 
Testament signed by me October the thirty first one thousand eight hun-

Street Ryde Isle of Wight in the County of Southampton Commander
R S William Smith Butler and Harriet Cullen Spinster both of the
same place & made oath as follows and first the said William Green
saith that he is the surviving attesting witness to the last Will & Testa-
ment of Sarah Carter formerly of Brighton in the County of Sussex but
late of Ryde aforesaid Widow deceased the same being hereunto annex-
ed and beginning thus "As my proper Will made by Mr Shugar" end
ing and dated thus "Signed by me Octobre the thirty first one thou-
sand eight hundred and thirty one" and thus subscribed "Sarah Car-
ter" and having now referred to the said Will and ??????? the word


"Daughter" on an erasure in the 13th line of the first sheet of the said Will
also the name "E C Bussells" interlined between the 22nd & 23rd lines thereof
also that several words appear to have been erased with a knife between
the 35th and 36th lines thereof also the following words added at the bottom
of the said sheet "and one hundred pounds to my daughter L100 Susanna
wish I could leave more to every one" the said words "one hundred" being
written above the word "fifty" which has been nearly erased with a knife
the word "daughters" have been altered to the word "daughter" by erasing
the "s" and the same "Anna" which had been added after the name "Su
sanna" being also nearly erased with a knife Also the name "Elizabeth
Capel Carter" struck thro' with a pen and the word "five" altered to "two"
in the tenth line of the second sheet the word "two" altered to "five" in
the eleventh line of the same Sheet the words "piece and a small piece"
struck through with a pen in the 12th line of the same Sheet and a
marginal note added or written nearly opposite to the said alterations
to wit "quite a mistake dear Ellen only a two guinea piece she must
have the two pieces each two guineas and make another guinea with
small pieces" also several words written & struck thro' with a pen in the
margin of the third & last sheet of the said Will he saith that at this
distance ??? time he cannot recollect whether any of the before recited inter-
lineations additions erasures or words written theon were or were not 
written & made in the said Will at the time he attested the execution 
thereof And the said William Smith & Harriet Cullen for themselves 
say that they are the subscribed witnesses to a Codicil to the last Will and
Testament of the said Deceased the same being written at the foot of the
said Will and bearing date the thirty first day of January 1848 And they
further say that on the 31st day of January aforesaid the said Testatrix 
duly executed her said Codicil by signing her name at the foot or end 
thereof in the presence of them these deponents both of whom were
present at the same time and these deponents both thereupon attested 
& subscribed the said Codicil in the presence of the said Testatrix And re-
ferring to the before recited interlineations additions erasures & words 
written thereon they further say that they cannot depose whether the
same or any part thereof were written & made in the said Will at the
time of the execution of the said Codicil for that on that occasion they
did not see any part of the said Will except the latter part thereof 
which appears on the lower half of the third sheet immediately above
the said Codicil And the said Willliam Green and William Smith for
themselves further say that they knew and were well acquainted with 
the said Deceased for many years prior and to the time of her death and
having frequently seen her write and write and subscribe her name
have thereby come also to know and be well acquainted with her manner
and character of handwriting and subscription and having now carefully
viewed and perused the said Will beginning ending & subscribed as afore
said they say they verily & in their consciences believe the whole bee??
series and contents thereof and also the said interlineations additions
and words written on erasures to be all of the true and proper handwriting 
and subscription of the said Sarah Carter Widow deceased And all these
Deponents lastly say that the said Deceased was at the date and execu-
tion of the said Codicil extremely infirm being upwards of the age of ninety
two years and that she was then and had been for some time previously 
unable to write with any distinctness and it being in the opinion of these
deponents impossible for the said deceased to have written the before recited
interlineations additions or words upon erasures in so firm a hand in any
part of the present year they say that the same must have been written
prior thereto and previous to the execution of the said Codicil on the 31st day of
January last  Wm Green  William Smith  Harriet Cullen  On the


fifth day of May 1848 the said William Green William Smith and Harriet
Cullen were duly sworn to the truth of this Affidavit by virtue ??????

Proved at London with a Codicil 13th May 1848 before the Judge
by the oath of Thomas Wren Carter the Son one of the executors named
in the Will to whom Admon was granted having been first sworn by 
Commission duly to administer Power reserved of making the like Grant
to The Reverend John Garret Bussell Clerk the other executor named in
the said Will and Edward Carter Esquire the executor named in the said Codicil
when they shall apply for the same
