The Arrival Day is August 28. The Workshop will start at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, and finish on Tuesday, September 3, in the afternoon.  We plan to have three one-hour lectures a day, two in the morning and one in the afternoon, with ample breaks for discussions. Program Outline:

Our list of lecturers/main speakers and titles of their lectures right now is as follows:

Ed Formanek (Penn State University) “The ring of generic matrices”.

Antonio Giambruno (University of Palermo) “Standard polynomials, Capelli polynomials and asymptotics”.

Alexander Kemer (Ulyanovsk University) "Conjecture of Procesi ".

Viktor Latyshev (Moscow State University) “Specht’s problem in positive characteristic”.

Sergei Mishchenko (Ulyanovsk University) “Almost Polynomial Growth Varieties of Linear Algebras”.

Amitai Regev (Weizmann Institute) “An - codimensions and cocharacters”.

Mikhail Zaicev (Moscow State University) “Numerical characteristics and extremal varieties”.

Financial Support:

A limited financial support from the Organizing Committee is available for the graduate and senior undergraduate students, whose participation is approved by the scientific advisor. Please e-mail your applications to Mikhail Kotchetov (mikhail@math.mun.ca) before August 10, 2002.

The deadline for applications from the participants of the Workshop is August 10, 2002. Later applications may be declined because the number of the participants is limited and we already have applications from North and South America, Europe and Asia! Deadline for submitting abstracts is May 10. The registration fee is only CAN $50, due at the time of registration. It should be paid at the registration desk by cash or check only. The registration fee will be reimbursed to the students and invited speakers.

Lodging:

The accommodation options for the participants can be found on the web page of the conference http://www.math.mun.ca/~yuri/PIA/default.htm

How to Get Here:

St. John's is the provincial center of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the east most in Canada. Please do not confuse it with Saint John, the largest city of the Province of New Brunswick (this occasionally happens to our visitors!). There are a number of flights to St. John's from Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa (Canada), London (UK), New York and Boston (USA). The St. John's International Airport is only few miles from the downtown. A taxi flat rate is about $20. We will also arrange to pick up the participants from the most  "popular" flights. Please keep us informed about your plans!

Sight Seeing:

We plan to arrange a tour to the birds sanctuary on Cape St. Mary about 150 km from St. John's on August 31 or September 1. There are also a number of other tours available in St. John's and around, including whale watching ones. There are many walking trails inside the city and a lot of berries and mushrooms in the neighborhoods. Please have your walking shoes.
