SCATTER

SCATTER
a program for computing scattering from a smooth periodic surface.

SCATTER calculates scattering matrix for acoustic (soft surface) and electromagnetic (E-polarizition, perfectly conducting surface) scattering on an infinite periodic cylindrical surface.
High accuracy is a prior feature of the program; it's main purpose is to provide test results for various numerical methods for diffraction in the resonant frequency range.
Numerical method is trigonometric collocation with corrections derived from the theory of pseudodifferential operators, based on the paper: B.A. Amosov, Approximate solution of elliptic pseudodifferential equations on a smooth closed curve, Z.fur Analysis und ihre Anwendungen 9:6, 545--563 (1990).
Fast and compact code; simple interface; executes from DOS command line.

scatter.exe MSDOS exe file and sample data (20 Kb, zip-compressed) For those who never heard of MSDOS: this program may be runnable under Windows-2000 or NT. And yes, 20 Kilo, not Mega. People cared then (and some still do).

(You may wonder why all these tiny files are yet compressed. There are several reasons. First, when SCATTER was initially put on the web in 1995 on the site of Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics in Moscow, the connection speed to that site made a big difference between 5 and 10 KB. Since I do not know where a boundary between small and large files lie, I always offer compressed downloads. Next, since zip is a very standard extension, there is no danger that a browser will try to open the file in an unexpected way. Finally, you can download parts or everything at once.)
