Twelveth daie of July in Anno Domini One thousand six hundred thirtie two I Nicholas
Pykes of the Citie of Bristoll gent beinge of good and perfect memory thankes be given
to the Allmightie God therefore Doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in
maner and forme followinge that is to saie First I recommend my Soule into the hands of
Allmightie God my maker hopeinge assuredly through the meritts of Jesus Christ my Saviour
to be made pertaker of life everlastinge And I committ my body to the earth from whence it
was taken Item concerninge my worldly substance and such revenues where?oth God of his
goodnes hath endued mee First I give to the poore of Redcliffe and Temple parishes sixe
pounds to be distributed at the discretion of my Overseers either to be bestowed in twelve
gownes of blacke Frize or the money as they shall thinke fitt Item I give to Margarett
my beloved wife the occupacon of that part of my Captiall house called the Friers situate
within the said Citie wherein Mr Henry Weston now dwelleth together with the rents
and profitts of the Fullers rackes lately erected and sett upp upon my land in my ground
next adioyninge to the temple Churchyard during the naturall life of my deare mother Mrs
Alice Pikes and noe longer And after the death of my said Mother I give and bequeath to
my said wife duringe her naturall life In honor and full satisfaccon of her ioynture and right
of dower All that parte of the house and garden the???th my mother now enioyeth and one rent
change of twentie pounds of lawfull english money yearely to be paid by my said wife or her
assignes received perceived and taken quarterly at fower quarters of the yeare (that is to saie)
At the birth of our Lord God, the Annunciacon of the blessed virgin Mary, the nativity of St
John the Baptist and St Michaell the Archangell, by equall portions as I now pay my
said Mother out of the rents issues and profitts of all my lands Tenements and hereditaments
called or knowne by the name of the Fryers and out of all the lands and tenements thereunto
adioyninge out of which I now pay my said Mother Item I give and bequeath to my said wife
the occupacon and profitt of all the fruite and herbage of my young orchard for eight yeares
for and towards the maintenance of my daughters Sarah and Susanna Item I give and
bequeath unto my daughter Grace the some of one hundred pounds of lawfull English money
to be paid unto her within sixe moneths after her age of one and twentie yeares or within sixe
moneths after her daie of marriage which shall first happen For the payment of such some of



one hundred pounds my will is and I doe hereby give full power and authority that my Executrix with my
Overseers or the survivor of them shall sell within three moneths after her full age or marriage as the case
requireth my co??er tenement in the highstreete next adioyning to the Bull taverne and the seller in St
Nicholas Streete lett with the said house for the best profitt it will yeeld and if it will yeeld above the some of
one hundred pounds the serplus I give to my sonne Walter Item I give to my two daugheters Sarath and
Susanna to either of them one hundred pounds apeece to be paid to either of them by my sonne Walter or
my next heire as they or either of them shall respectively accomplish the age of twentie yeares which if
my said sonne or next heire shall not paie and performe accordingly Then my will is and I doe hereby give
full power and authority to my wife and overseers hereafter named or the survivor of them by one or
more sales as occasion shall require to sell soe much of my lands and tenements (except my Capitall
house or messuage called by the name of the Fryers and the grounds thereunto belonging and adioyning
and the lodge and ground now in the occupacon of Anthony Merritt) as will yeeld soe much money
to paie to either of them the some of one hundred pounds apeece as either of them shall respectively
accomplish the age of twentie yeares Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarath halfe the
rent of the tenement or orchard and garden which I have lett to Thomas Edge  priner duringe the
terme of his lease and halfe the profitt and benefitt of the same tenement orchard and garden for and
duringe two yeares after the lease ended for and towards her maintenance and breeding Item I give &
bequeath to my daughter Susanna for and towards her maintenance and breeding the other halfe of
the same tenement orchard and garden last menconed and halfe the profitt and benefitt of the same
tenement orchard and garden for and duringe three yeares after the lease ended And if either of
them die before the age of twentie yeares my will is then that the survivor of them shall have halfe
her porcon of one hundred pounds and the other halfe I give and bequeath unto my sonne Walter
Item  I give to my sonne Walter my ringe of gold wherewith I seale graven with my armes and my
best silverbole and all the standinge bedsteeds tablebords and hanginges in the said messuage called
the Fryers (excepting those that now are in the litle tenement) the occupacon of which excepted
things I leave and will to his mother to be used onely for her life Item I give to him all my bookes
and instruments and fower spoones given to him by his godfathers and godmother and all my apparrell
except my best blacke Cloke or light coloured cloke one of which I give to my lovinge friend Mr
Giles Gylson thelder at his choise Item I give to my daughter Mary Knight my white holland
quilte and the plate and spoones that was given to her by her godfather and godmothers Item I give to
my daughter Grace my second best bole and the spoones that were given to her by her Godfather
and godmothers Item I give to my daughters Sarath and Susanna the spoones that were given to them
by their godfathers and godmothers  Item I give to my living kinsman Mr Thomas Browne gent
my ringe cutt or graven with a deaths head upon it Item I give to my loving Cosen Mr Gyles
Earle gent to be paid unto him by my Executrix upon my daie of my buriall soe much money as will
buy him such a ringe of the like value as I gave to my Cosin Mr Thomas Browne Item I give
to my very loving mother and my very loving Aunt Mrs Mirabell Druse twentie shillings
apeece in gold to buy either of them a ringe to weare for my sake Item the occupacon of all the
rest of my goods and chattells whatsoever not before given nore bequeathed I wholie give and
bequeath to Margarett my beloved wife whom I make my full and whole Executrix And my will is
that if my wife shall marry after my death That then imediately after her marriage my
daughters Sarath and Susanna shall have the halfendeale of all my said goods [-- and Chattels rights                    [-- crossed out --]

Mr Thomas Browne and Mr Giles Earle Gent my Overseers of this my last will & testament
whom I trust upon speciall confidence I repose withem and the survivors and survivor of them that
they will see the same to be duly executed and performed And I due hereby revoke and adnull all and


every former testament will legacie bequeast Executors or Overseers by mee at any tyme heretofore
made willed named and bequeathed whatsoever In witness whereof I have to this last will and testament
sett my and and seale the daie and yeare first above written In presence of those whose names are here
subscribed I doe herewithall acknowledge and publish that whatsoever words are herein interlyned or
