ON the thirty first day of January 1877
the Will with two Codicils of
                     Dorothy Gooch
late of No 1 Gloucester Place now called Gloucester Terrace
Southsea in the Parish of Portsea in the County of Southampton Widow
deceased, who died on the third day of January 1877
at No 1 Gloucester Terrace Southsea aforesaid
was proved in Her Majesty's High Court of Justice in the District Registry attached to
the Probate Division thereof at Winchester by the Oaths of
the Reverend Henry Hawkes of Saint Pauls Square Southsea
aforesaid Clerk James Roberts of No 8 Thyra Grove North
Finchley in the County of Middlesex Esquire and William
Beresford Chambers Christy of Marston Lodge Elm Grove
Southsea aforesaid Esquire Doctor of Medicine a retired Surgeon
from the Royal Navy the Executors named in the Will
 they having been first sworn duly to administer

This is the last Will and Testament of me
Dorothy Gooch of Number 1 Gloucester Place Southsea in the Parish of
Portsea in the County of Southampton Widow I appoint my Sister Julia
Susanna Edwards Spinster and my friends The Reverend Henry Hawkes of Saint
Pauls Square Southsea aforesaid James Roberts of Number 8 Tyra Terrace North
Finchley in the County of Middlesex Esquire and William Beresford Chambers
Christy Esquire Doctor of Medicine and a retired Surgeon from the Royal Navy
Trustees and Executors of this my Will and I devise to them their heirs executors
and administrators all estates vested in me as a Trustee or Mortgagee subject
to the trusts and equities affecting the same respectively I give and bequeath my
Fire Screen in my Drawing Room (the centre of which was worked by my Niece
Mare Cockburn Sanders Holbrook) My Elizabethian Chair and the two Mahogenny
Stools in my Drawing Room (the Seats of which were worked by Mrs Jane
Christy Inman) My Piano My Looking Glass in my bedroom My Clock (made by
Savory and Sons of Cornhill) and my Gold Hunting Watch and Gold chain which
formerly belonged to my late husband unto my Said Sister Julia Susanna Edwards
for her life and after her decease I bequeath the said Fire Screen to the said Mary
Cockburn Sanders Holbrook The said Elizabethan Chair the said two Stoools
and my said looking glass and Clock to Jane Christy Kane the daughter of the
said Jane Christy Inman The said Piano to my Cousins Emily Payne and Margaretta
Payne and the said Watch and Chain to Edward Horatio Wilson the Nephew of
my late husband And I give and bequeath all my jewels trinkets plate linen
china glass books pictures furniture and other household effects (not hereinbefore
disposed of) unto my said Sister Julia Susanna Edwards absolutely I direct my
said Trustees or the Trustees or Trustee for the time being to set apart out of the
income of the residue of my real and personal estate a sum sufficient to pay an
Annuity of Ten pounds clear of all Legacy Duty and all other incidental expences
and deductions to Mrs Harriet Bishop of Christchurch in the County of Southampton
aforesaid Widow (who was the companion to my late friend Mrs John Spicer deceased)
for her separate and inalienable use by quarterly payments the first of such payments
to be made at the expiration of Three months from the time of my decease I bequeath
the following Legacies namely To my friend Major John Poo Beresford the sum of
Three hundred pounds free from Legacy duty and other deductions To my Coachman
Alexander Habens and my Gardener John Evans the sum of Nineteen pounds and
nineteen shillings each To my Servant Mary Fletcher the sum of Ten pounds for
mourning To my Servant Ann Marshall the sum of Twenty pounds and Ten pounds



for mourning free of Legacy Duty for her sole and separate use To the
Treasurer for the time being of the Southsea Benevolent Society the sum of
nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings to be applied for the General purposes
of the said Society To the Manager for the time being of the School attached to
Saint Paul's Church at Southsea aforesaid the sum of nineteen pounds and nineteen
Shillings to be applied for the general purposes of the said School To the Treasurer
for the time being of the School of Home for the Blind in Park Lane Southsea
aforesaid the sum of Two hundred pounds to be applied for the general purposes
of the said School or Home And I direct the said Legacies to be paid out of such
part of my personal estate as the law permits to be bequeathed for charitable
purposes and within three calendar months after my decease and that the receipt
of the Treasurer or Manager for the time being of the said Society and Schools
respectively shall be a sufficient discharge for the same I give and devise all
my share and interest in the freehold messuage and premises wherein I and
my said Sister now reside situate and being Number 1 Gloucester Place Southsea
aforesaid Also of and in the two pieces or parcels of land or garden ground situate
in or near Gloucester Place aforesaid Also of and in the two freehold messuages
land and premises situate in Oakley Place King's Road Southsea aforesaid And
also of and in my freehold messuage and premises in Orange Street in the Town
of Portsea in the County of Southampton aforesaid And all other my real estate
(if any) whatsoever and wheresoever situate and being of or to which I may be
possessed or entitled at the time of my decease And also all my ready money
and securities for money and all the rest and residue of my personal estate
whatsoever unto the said Henry Hawkes James Roberts and William Beresford
Chambers Christy their heirs executors administrators and assigns respectively
subject to the payment thereout of my just debts and funeral and testamentary
expenses Upon Trust that the said Henry Hawkes James Roberts and William
Beresford Chambers Christy or the survivors or survivor of them or the heirs
executors or administrators of such survivor or other the Trustees or Trustee for the
time being of this my Will (hereinafter referred to as my said Trustees or Trustee)
shall stand possessed thereof and of the stocks funds and securities in or upon
which my moneys or any part thereof may be invested Upon Trust to receive the
rents dividends and annual produce thereof and pay the same unto or permit
my said Sister Julia Susanna Edwards to receive the same during her life and
from and after her decease Upon trust to sell the said messuages land
hereditaments and real estate either my public auction or private Contract with power



to make any special conditions or stipulations as to title or evidence of title
or otherwise and with power to buy in the said hereditaments and premises
or any part thereof at any attempted sale thereof by auction and to rescind
or vary either on terms or gratuitously any Contract for the sale thereof and
to resell the premises so bought in or the contract for the Sale whereof shall have
been so rescinded as aforesaid without being answerable for any loss occasioned
thereby and to execute assurances give effectual receipts for the purchase money
and do all such acts and things for completing any such sale or sales as they or
he may think fit And to sell call in and convert into money such parts of
my said personal estate as shall not consist of money and to stand possessed
of the money to be produced by such sale or sales calling in and conversion
Upon Trust after payment thereout of the expenses of and attending such sale
or sales to pay the following Legacies which I direct shall be paid within Three
Calendar months after the death of my said Sister or of my death in case I shall
survive here namely To the said William Beresford Chambers Christy the
sum of Two thousand pounds but in case he shall die before the said Legacy
shall become payable Then I give the same to his wife Eliza Christy for her
sole and separate use To Eliza Ann Christy and Mary Hargrave Christy
(the Sisters of the said William Beresford Chambers Christy) the sum of One
thousand pounds to be equally divided between them and if either of them
shall die before the same shall become payable then I give the whole of
the said sum of One thousand pounds to the other of them To Wyvell James
Christy of Southsea aforesaid Architect and Surveyor the brother of the said
William Beresford Chambers Christy the sum of Five hundred pounds
but in case he shall die before the said Legacy shall become payable Then
I give the same to his Wife Ellen Christy for her sole and separate use
To Susan Stone the Widow of the late Captain Stone the sum of Four hundred
pounds and if she shall die before the same shall become payable then I give
the said sum of Four hundred pounds unto and equally between her two
Sons William Stone and Charles Henry Stone and in case of the death of
either of them before the same shall become payable then I give the whole of
the said sum of Four hundred pounds to the other of them To the said Charles
Henry Stone the sum of Five hundred pounds To the said William Stone the
sum of Three hundred pounds To Eliza Holbrook Widow of the late Commander
Charles Holbrook of the Royal Navy the sum of Three hundred pounds for her
sole and separate use To Her Son Nicol Holbrook a Lieutenant in the Royal



Marine Light Infantry the sum of Five hundred pounds To his
Daughter Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook the sum of Three hudnred pounds
for her sole and separate use free of Legacy dutry and other deductions and
to be vested in and payable to her if and when she shall attain the age
of Twenty one years or be married And until the said Maud Gooch Denison
Holbrook shall attain the said age of Twenty one years or marry I direct my
said Trustees or Trustee to retain the said Legacy and invest the same in their
or his names or name in or upon the public stocks or funds or other Government
Securities of the United Kingdom and pay the interest dividends or annual
income thereof unto or permit the said Nicol Holbrook to receive the same
during the minority and discoverture of the said Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook
to whom the same shall belong in order that the same may be applied by
him at his discretion for the benefit of the said Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook
and without his being obliged to render any account of the application thereof
And if the said Nicol Holbrook shall die during the minority or discoverture
of the said Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook then I direct my said Trustees or
Trustee at their discretion to apply the said interest dividends or annual income
for or towards the maintenance and education or otherwise for the benefit
of the said Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook or to pay the same to the Guardian
or Guardians of the said Maud Gooch Denison Holbrook without being liable
to see the application thereof To Mary Cockburn Sanders Holbrook the Sister of
the said Nicol Holbrook the sum of Two thousand pounds for her sole and
separate use To John Gabriel Yarwood Holbrook and David Henry Holbrook
other Sons of the said Commander Charles Holbrook the sum of Six hundred
pounds to be equally divided between them but if either of them shall die
before the same shall become payable then I give the whole of the said sum of
Six hundred pounds to the other of them To Emily Jane Payne the Widow of the
late James Edward Payne late of York Place City Road Solicitor deceased the sum
of One thousand pounds for her sole and separate use To James Edward Undy
Payne the Son of the said James Edward Payne the sum of Five hundred pounds
To Emily Payne and Margaretta Payne the Sisters of the said James Edward Undy
Payne the sum of Five hundred pounds to be equally divided between them
but if either of them shall die before the same shall become payable then I give
the whole of the said sum of Five hundred pounds to the other of them
To Susan Undy and James Roberts (the husband of Helen Maria Roberts the
deceased Sister of the said Susan Undy) the sum of One thousand pounds



to be equally divided between them but if either of them shall die before the
same shall become payable Then I give the whole of the said sum of One
thousand pounds to the other of them To Maria Bradley of Brougham Terrace
Southsea aforesaid the sum of Four hundred pounds To Emily Burbey
and Louisa Burbey the nieces of the said Maria Bradley the sum of Two
hundred pounds to be equally divided between them but if either of them
shall die before the same shall become payable then I give the whole of the said
sum of Two hundred pounds to the other of them To Mary Richardson the daughter
of Richard Bradley and another niece of the said Maria Bradley the sum of
Three hundred pounds To Edward Horatio Wilson Son of Doctor E  T  Wilson
of the Academy Brixton Hill and a Nephew of my late husband the sum of
Eight hundred pounds (To my Godson Henry Gordon Gooch Ashton a Son of James
Ashton a Navigating Lieutenant in the Royal Navy the sum of Three hundred
pounds) To Sarah Foggo the Widow of the late David Foggo of the Royal Navy
the sum of Two hundred pounds To Mary Wright the Widow of the late
Lieutenant Colonel Wright of the Royal Marine Light Infantry the sum of Five
hundred pounds To Alicia Wright the Sister of the late Lieutenant Colonel Wright
the sum of Three hundred pounds To Frances Dowse of Southsea aforesaid
Spinster the daughter of the late Mr Dowse Solicitor deceased and sister to Commander
Dowse of the Royal Navy the sum of Five hundred pounds To Isabella Mary
Sadler widow of John Sadler deceased late a Clerk in the Portsmouth Dockyard the
sum of Four hundred pounds To Helen Ashton the Wife of James Ashton and her
Sister Isabella Sadler and John Paul Sadler the Children of the said Isabella Mary
Sadler the sum of Two hundred pounds each To Henry Gooch Ashton the son
of the said Helen Ashton the sum of Three hundred pounds free of Legacy duty
and other deductions and to be vested in and payable to him if and when he
shall attain the age of Twenty one years And until he shall attain that age
I direct my said Trustees or Trustee to retain the said Legacy and invest the
same in their or his names or name in or upon the public stocks or funds
or other Government securities of the United Kingdom and pay the interest
dividends or annual income thereof unto or permit the said Helen Ashton the
Mother of the said Henry Gooch Ashton to receive the same during his minority
to whom the same shall belong in order that the same may be applied
by her at her discretion for the benefit of the said Henry Gooch Ashton and without
her being obliged to render any account of the application thereof And if the said
Helen Ashton shall die during the minority of the said Henry Gooch Ashton



then I direct my said Trustees or Trustee at their discretion to apply the
said interest dividends or annual income for or towards the maintenance and
educatino or otherwise for the benefit of the said Henry Gooch Ashton or to pay
the same to the Guardian or Guardians of the said Henry Gooch Ashton without
being liable to see to the application thereof To Charlotte Reed of Number 5
Southsea Terrace Southsea aforesaid Widow of James Reed late of Portsmouth
Ship Broker deceased the sum of One hundred pounds and to my Friend and
Surgeon William Henry Julius Merrell Esquire the sum of One hundred
pounds And I direct that the two last mentioned Legacies shall be paid free
from Legacy Duty and other deductions And as to all the rest and residue of
my said moneys securities and personal estate after payment of the said
legacies and from and after the decease of my said Sister I give and bequeath
the same unto the said Henry Hawkes James Roberts and William Beresford
Chambers Christy in equal shares if more than one and if there shall be only
one of them then living then I give and bequeath the whole thereof to that one
I hereby declare that the shares which I intend the said James Roberts and William
Beresford Chambers Christy shall take in my said residuary estate shall be
in addition to the legacies I have hereinbefore given to them I declare that any
money which under this my Will may become payable to a female shall be for her
own sole and separate use free from the debts control and engagements of any
husband to whom she may be married at the time when the same shall be paid
and that her receipts alone notwithstanding her coverture shall be sufficient
discharges for the money in such receipt or receipts expressed to be received And
I declare that if either of the Trustees herein named shall die in my lifetime
or shall desire to retire from or refuse or become incapable to act in the Trusts
of this my Will before the same shall be fully performed than and in every
such case it shall be lawful for my said Sister during her life and after her
decease for the continuing Trustees or Trustee for the time being of this my Will
and if there shall be no continuing Trustee then for the retiring or refusing
Trustees or Trustee or the executors or administrators of the last acting Trustee
to appoint any other person or persons to be a Trustee or Trustees in the place
of the Trustee or Trustees so dying or desiring to retire or refusing or becoming
incapable to act as aforesaid And upon every such appointment the trust premises
shall be so transferred as to become vested in the new Trustee or Trustees either
jointly with the continuing Trustee or Trustees or solely as the case may require
And every such new Trustee (as well before as after the said trust premises



shall have become vested in him) shall have all the powers and authorities
of the Trustee for whom he shall be substituted In Witness whereof I have
to this my Will contained in this and the six preceding sheets of paper set my
hand to each of the said Sheets this fifth day of August One thousand eight
hundred and seventy six

I hereby bequeath to my friend Mr William Pearce of the Town of Portsea in
the County of Southampton aforesaid Solicitor for his kindness and attention
to me and my late Sister Julia Susanna Edwards the sum of One hundred
pounds free of legacy Duty And in all other respects I confirm my said Will
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty seventh day of
December One thousand eight hundred and seventy six

declare this to be a second Codicil to my last Will and Testament which bears
date the fifth day of August One thousand eight hundred and seventy six


Whereas my Sister Julia Susanna Edwards has lately died and by her
Will she gave and bequeathed certain pecuniary Legacies to various persons
And whereas all the real and personal property or or to which I and my
said Sister were possessed or entitled belonged to us jointly and was invested in
our joint name and in consequence of the death of my said Sister now belongs
to and becomes my sole property And Whereas I am desirous of fulfilling
and carrying out my said Sister's intentions and bequeathing the same
Legacies to the same persons as are mentioned in the Will of my said Sister
Now I therefore direct my Trustees or the Trustees or Trustee for the time being
of my said Will to set apart out of the income of the residue of my real
and personal estate a sum sufficient to pay an annuity of Ten pounds a year
clear of all Legacy duty and other deductions to Mrs Harriet Bishop of Christchurch
in the County of Southampton aforesaid Widow for her separate and inalienable
use by quarterly payments the first of such payments to be made at the
expiration of Three Calendar months from the time of my decease And also
a sum sufficient to produce by the income therefrom a clear yearly sum
of Forty pounds and to pay the same quarterly to my faithful servant Mary
Fletcher during her life the first of such quarterly payments to be made
within three calendar months after my death I also bequeath the following
Legacies to Jane Christy Kane the Wife of John Keymer Kane of the Ordnance
Department at Dublin the sum of Two thousand pounds for her sol and
separate use To the Reverend Henry Hawkes the sum of Five hundred
pounds in addition to what I have given him by my said Will To the Minister
for the time being of the High Street Chapel in the Town of Portsmouth out of such
part of my personal estate as the law permits to be bequeathed for charitable
purposes the sum of One hundred pounds to be applied and disposed of by him
in repairs or improvements in the Schools or otherwise for the benefit of the
charitable Societies in connection with the said Chapel as the said Minister
may think proper And I direct that the receipt alone of the said Minister for
the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my Trustees and Executors for the
said Legacy And that the two last mentioned Legacies shall be paid free of Legacy
duty to Ann Hobbs the late Mistress of the Lancasterian School of Portsea the sum
of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings To Lucy Foord the present Mistress
of the said School the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings To my
Servants Alexander Habens Thomas Bond and Ann Marshall the sum of Nineteen
pounds and nineteen shillings each To Charlotte Reed of Number 5 Southsea



Terrace Southsea aforesaid the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen
Shillings To my Gardener John Evans the sum of Nineteen pounds and nineteen
Shillings To Alicia Wright the Daughter of the late Doctor Wright of Haslar
Hospital the sum of Five hundred pounds To Mary Wright the Widow of
the late Lieutenant Colonel Wright of The Royal Marine Light Infantry the sum of
One thousand pounds To Wyvell James Christy of Southsea aforesaid Architect
and Surveyor and his Sister Benham Piers Christy the sum of One thousand
pounds to be equally divided between them and if either of them shall die
before me then I give the whole thereof to the other of them To Susan Undy
and her Brother in law Mr James Roberts who is one of my Trustees the sum of
One thousand pounds to be equally divided between them And if either
of them shall die before me then I give the whole thereof to the other of them
To Emily Jane Payne the Widow of the late James Edward Payne late of York
Place City Road Solicitor deceased the sum of Four hundred pounds To James
Edward Undy Payne Emily Louisa Payne and Margaretta Payne the Children
of the said James Edward Payne the sum of Two hundred pounds to each To
Isabella Sadler the Widow of the late John Sadler of the Portsmouth Dockyard
the sum of Four hundred pounds To Helen Ashton the Wife of James Ashton
and Isabella Sadler the daughters of the said John Sadler the sum of Four
hundred pounds to be equally divided between them And if either of them
shall die before me then I give the whole thereof to the other of them To John
Paul Sadler the Son of the said John Sadler the sum of Four hundred pounds
and if he shall die before me then I give the same to his said Sisters Helen Ashton
and Isabella Sadler in equal shares To Mary Waller the Sister of the late Ann
Pines the sum of Two hundred pounds free from Legacy duty and other
deductions to Maria Pines the Niece of the said Mary Waller the sum of Five
hundred pounds To William Stone and Charles Henry Stone the Sons of the late
Mrs Susan Stone the sum of Five hundred pounds between them in equal
shares and To the said William Stone in addition to the aforesaid Legacy
the sum of Two hundred pounds To Frances Dowse the Sister of Captain Dowse
of the Royal Navy the sum of Five hundred pounds To Annie Foster Louisa
Foster and Sarah Foster the Daughters of the late Reverend Thomas Foster of Southsea
aforesaid the sum of Two hundred pounds between them in equal shares To Eliza
Christy the Wife of my Trustee William Beresford Chambers Christy the sum of
Three hundred pounds To the said John Keymer Kane the sum of One hundred
pounds To his Son Francis Inman Kane the sum of One hundred pounds and



To Beresford Kane Barton Kane and Mary Caroline Stevens Kane
the sum of One hundred pounds each I declare that any money which I
have given by this Codicil to any female shall be for her own sole and separate
use free from the debts control and engagements of any husband to whom she may
be married at the time when the same shall be paid and that her receipt
alone notwithstanding her coverture shall be a sufficient discharge to my
Trustees for the money in such receipt expressed to be received And in all other
respects I confirm my said Will In Witness whereof I have hereunto set
my hand this twenty eighth day of December One thousand eight hundred
and seventy six

Proved at Winchester with two Codicils the thirty first day of January
1877 by the Oaths of the Reverend Henry Hawkes Clerk James Roberts Esquire and
William Beresford Chambers Christy Esqr Doctor of Medicine the Executors named
in the Will to whom administration was granted

The Testatrix Dorothy Gooch was late of 1 Gloucester Place (now called Gloucester
Terrace) Southsea in the parish of Portsea in the County of Southampton Widow
and died on the third day of January 1877 at 1 Gloucester Terrace aforesaid
